Day Thirty Three: Magic Fountains in Lima

We woke up early, yet again and left Puno for Juliaca Aeropeurto. We had an early flight back to Lima.

We got in to Lima around 11ish and headed back to our nice little Spanish colonial style hotel in Miraflores.

For lunch we headed down to the seaside restaurant precinct in Miraflores. This district of Lima is beautiful. Lots of parks, gardens and pretty streets. A cool thing in Peru is the mobile ice cream stands, similar to the ones you find in oz, but on wheels (like a tuk tuk). This concept should definitely be adopted in aust. We shouldn't have to walk to get an ice cream right?

For lunch we feasted, well at least I did. I tried Cebiche or Ceviche for some. It's like Sashimi - but South American style - raw fish with lots and lots of lemon, herbs, peppers and chilli. Very nice and refreshing. Also good with beer. For main I tried the sole and rice. Really really good seafood. Just what you needed on a sunny Lima day by the sea. Sim ate a bit lighter and had a chicken sandwich. Her stomach pains are better now, no more Cusco Cramps.

We strolled around the streets of Miraflores for a few hours, looking at a few different parks. Parque Kennedy, on honour of JFK (random) was packed with people playing, walking dogs, painters selling paintings and many popcorn/Churros stands.

We were also hoping to go to a cafe called Arabica Espresso, where they sold Tunki coffee, which we were told is an award winning coffee in the world. Unfortunately it was closed Sundays, tomorrow morning though. I miss good coffee.

That evening we headed into town and visited the Circuito Ma'gico del Agua, the greatest complex of water fountains in the world apparently (certified by Guinness WR). We were super impressed actually. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. The dozen or so fountains however, were very extravagant. The main fountain display had an amazing Light show and video presentation within it, with music and all. The place was so crowded, 1000's of people there. I guess Lima is like 2 and half times bigger than Sydney in population. I kinda think this concept would work in Sydney too. Perhaps the new Barrangaroo site could do something like that. Tourists would love it. Sydney could do with more fountains I reckon, I know we have the harbor but hey, you can never have enough water features.

After the magic of the fountains, we headed into the main square again, plaza de armas, to check out the old buildings at night. The old part of Lima is really pretty, laid out by the Spanish conqueror Francisco Pissarro into a grid, it's now called Pissarro's chess board.

I really like Lima, it has quite a lot of history and character. For a city that is nearly 500years old it's lovely.

After seeing the lights of the capital, we headed back to our hotel for apple pie and ice cream. Delicious.

Buenos noches chiccos!k

  1. Hi Mat, take care. I have concern eating raw fish any time but hey after GPig you must have a strong stomach I guess. You sure Lima's population bugger than Sydney (Syd about 3 mil)? Fountains sound really great better than Archie I guess. It's Australia Day as I write here and we have been promised temps in the 40s so off to Adams this afternoon for a pool party.
Take care both of you - love Dad
